A 4-day workshop with Linda Stonestreet

Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa California

January 25-28, 2024

What is this workshop?

Vocal Improvisation with purpose. An immersive form of vocal improvisation that propels creative expression. This is an experiential workshop for singers to increase their confidence through embodied learning. We will be working with form and practice, building ensembles, soloing, using murmuration, word, melody, and rhythm. This work is about collaboration. It’s about making spontaneous music in the moment. It’s about making stuff up, enjoying the process and following and trusting ourselves, the music, and our partners. We will begin with a few basic forms and become confident with them. Then gradually add more depth and complexity as we go depending on the group capacity. This course is for singers who want to improve their skill in and knowledge of collaboration and vocal improvisation. Entry level improvisers welcome. This course is for experienced singers. Sight reading is not required.

Women CircleSing Second Sundays

Circlesinging is an ancient community ritual where people of good will gather together in the shape of a circle with a guide who leads improvised patterns and creates music in the moment. The singing is meant to fill up the space and bodies of all who share the experience. Through the use of movement, sound and sometimes words, we collectively create rhythmic patterns and melodic structures to add to the flow and depth of the experience. The purpose of this gathering is to elevate the spirit. Women Singers of all levels welcome. Please arrive healthy. 30 women max. The second sunday Women's Circle Sing is held at a private venue on private land in Kenwood, Valley Of The Moon, Sonoma County, CA.

Linda Stonestreet is the founder of the Sing! Project, a regional initiative, seeding and networking circlesinging groups and vocal improvisation workshops for the purpose of growing and strengthening community, with a broader vision of expanding a network for the global vocal improvisation communities. Born in the San Francisco Bay Area, she is mentored by Rhiannon in her Vocal River traditions and guides vocal improvisational groups based on Rhiannon’s Vocal River Body of Improvisational practices. She is a Singer-Songwriter, recording artist with 40+ songs published across multiple-genre. As a former civil servant in California State’s Natural Resources Division, she utilizes her experience in State government practices and expertise in water issues to grow capacity in rural communities throughout California with Rural Community Assistance Corp. She is initiated in Andean indigenous traditions mentored by Marti Spiegelman MFA and by Jose Luis Herrera.
